St Xaviers find their flight to Delhi


Down by a goal,St.Xavier’’s HSS,Mapusa rallied to register a well deserved 3-2 win over Rosary HSS , Navelim and emerge state champions of Subroto Mukherjee Cup for girls under-17 played at artificial grounds ,Fatorda on Tuesday.

Somaaya Mukundan ,the reliable striker of Rosary provided the lead to the South Goa champions in the third minute when she let go an angular shot off a pass from defender Valfiya Pires after Prince Mascarenhas and Fevina Costa had done the spade work on the right flank.

It was St Xaviers goalkeeper Ashika who kept the girls from Navelim at bay with some good saves.

St.Xavier’’s HSS did not take much time to level the score as within two minutes medio Kushboo Saundatikar bulged the nets after a Rosary Higher Secondary defender miss passed the ball,which Kushboo picked up and slammed in to the chagrin of keeper Meliza Pinto guarding the Rosary Higher goal.

The match then wore on with the ball moving from one end to the other. Though the proceedings were devoid of any pleasing passes, both teams matched each other well in most departments of the game.

The St. Xavier’’s midfield of Sushmita Jadav ,substitute Twisha Chopra and medio Rani Tapno created some flowing moves as they worked in tandem with each other, and their defense too stood firm with Divya Sangodkar ,Diviya Tuyenkar and Ulendy Dias giving a good account of themselves.

On the other hand, Rosary Higher Secondary depended heavily on striker Somaaya Mukundan and though she did try some shoots,most of them were off the mark.

Midway into the first half, Rosary Higher Secondary once again creating a flourishing move which saw Somaaya Mukundan bulging the nets to take the score 2-1 in their favour.

However,as the half time neared on, St.Xavier’’s received a free kick just outside the box which Sushmita Jadav floated right at the rival goal-mouth from where Divya Sangodkar tapped the ball in to restore parity 2-2.

The second session saw both the teams vying for supremacy and St.Xaiver’’s Higher Secondary proved their might by scoring the match winner in the 48th minute of play through Sushmita Jadav when she let go a 20 yard shot, right into the nets, deceiving the Rosary Higher Secondary School keeper Meliza Pinto as the ball rolled in.
